Alan Deforest Smith Lecture

The Alan DeForest Smith Memorial Lecture was established in honor of an orthopaedic surgeon who dedicated his career to the achievement of excellence in medical education and patient care. Dr. Smith directed the New York Orthopaedic Hospital from 1940 to 1956, a time of critical transition for the Hospital. It was during these years that NYOH joined the family of hospitals known as Columbia-Presbyterian Medical Center, a collaboration which has proved most fruitful.  Dr. Frank E. Stinchfield, Dr. Smith’s successor, initiated the tradition whereby the Alan DeForest Smith Memorial Lecture is given at the New York Orthopaedic Hospital Alumni meetings by a visiting professor prominent in the field of orthopaedic surgery.
