Dr. Christopher Ahmad Co-Authors Book on Baseball Injuries

April 17, 2018

Columbia Orthopedics Chief of Sports Medicine, Vice Chair of Research, and New York Yankees Head Team Physician, Christopher S. Ahmad, MD, is the co-author of Play Ball: Don’t Let Injuries Sideline You This Season, along with the President and CEO of JAG Physical Therapy and athletic trainer John Galluci, Jr, MS, ATC, PT, DPT. The book discusses the rise of injuries in baseball players and ways to prevent arm injuries in youth baseball. Dr. Ahmad believes this book will help create a better understanding of baseball injuries for players, parents, and coaches.

He says, “Allowing kids to live their dreams is why we are committed to being the best physicians we can be in sports medicine. 50% of baseball injuries are from overuse, and 60% of these injuries could have been avoided with simple measures. The repetitive baseball motions, in combination with young age, specialization, professionalism, and fatigue muscles cause tissue stress without allowing for recovery. This book is written to get to the root of the problem through education and demystifying the true factors related to baseball injuries.”

Manager of the NY Yankees, Joe Girardi, praised the book saying:

"As a manager, there is nothing more frustrating than having a player out due to injury. I feel privileged to have Dr. Ahmad and his talented group of medical professionals taking care of our athletes each and every day. Play Ball does an exceptional job of providing the knowledge of our nation's top sports medicine specialists and delivering it in a way that makes it easy to follow, understand, and absorb. This book serves as a go-to guide, ensuring that athletes at all levels and abilities receive the same access to medical advice as our professionals."

Play Ball will be published by Simon & Schuster on May 1. You can pre-order a copy here.
