David Kovacevic, MD, Chief of Shoulder, Elbow, and Sports Medicine at New York-Presbyterian Lawrence Hospital, recently published in the Journal of Shoulder and Elbow Surgery (JSES). His study titled “Performance of PROMIS Global-10 compared with legacy instruments in patients with shoulder arthritis” determined the correlation between the PROMIS Global-10 and several legacy patient-reported outcome measures to validate its overall performance as well as usefulness in patients with shoulder arthritis. Based on the study's findings, Dr. Kovacevic does not recommend using the PROMIS Global-10 for patients suffering from shoulder arthritis.

“The NIH PROMIS Global-10, while validated for general health in our U.S. population, has yet to be validated in specific musculoskeletal and orthopedic patient populations," said Dr. Kovacevic. "This study evaluated the performance of the PROMIS Global-10 compared with legacy instruments in patients with shoulder arthritis and found that it is an inappropriate instrument for outcome measurement in such populations.”
