Illinois Sets Pitch Limit for HS Athletes Based on Dr. Ahmad Research

June 13, 2017

The Illinois High School Association (IHSA) has set 105 pitches per game limit on its players based on a position statement from the American Sports Medicine Institute (ASMI), which was helped formed by research from Columbia Orthopedics sports medicine specialist Christopher Ahmad, MD. This rule’s change is the result of a mandate from the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) after a sharp rise in Tommy John surgeries in high school athletes throughout the United States. A 2016 quote from Dr. Ahmad on the need for young athletes to avoid Tommy John surgery and the increase in overuse injuries was included in an article about IHSA’s new guidelines in the Chambana Sun.

For more about the pitch limit, please read the original article in the Chambana Sun.
