Thomas Hickernell, MD

Biography Thomas, son of Craig and Mary Anne Hickernell, was born here at Babies’ Hospital (before there was CHONY) and raised in Pelham, NY. Tom is the oldest of four children, with three younger sisters: Katherine, Laura, and Sarah. After graduating from Pelham Memorial High School, Tom matriculated at Union College in Schenectady, NY after being recruited by the football team. He began college by enrolling in Engineering 101 and playing for the Union College Dutchmen Football team, but after one trimester he decided his time and talents were better spent elsewhere. He switched from engineering to biochemistry, and from football to a fraternity, and never looked back.

Biography James was born in Portland, Oregon, and moved several times during his childhood to California, China, and then Taiwan where James graduated as valedictorian from Taipei American School in 2002. Inspired by his parents, who were both computer engineers, he moved back to the U.S. for college where he pursued a BS and MS in electrical engineering at Stanford University with a focus on hardware engineering. He first became interested in medicine when he designed and built a pulse oximeter during an analog circuits lab. An avid runner, James experienced an unfortunate ankle injury during college and his successful ankle surgery led him on a path towards a career in orthopedics. While at Stanford, he met his future wife, Joanne.

Biography Stuart was born in Vancouver, BC and is the oldest son of Will and Martha Mackenzie. He was fortunate to spend his early childhood surrounded by the Mackenzie and Kerrin families, before moving to Wilmington, Delaware for his father’s Pediatric Orthopedic fellowship. After five years back in Vancouver, the Mackenzies returned to Delaware in 1993, where he attended Tower Hill School. Stuart returned to Canada to attend Trinity College at the University of Toronto, where he studied Zoology and Primatology.

Biography Born in Palisades, New York, Katie is the third of four children of parents Mel and Phoebe Rosenwasser. She grew up a tag-a-long tomboy behind brothers Ted and Chuck and participated in every sport under the sun until finally settling on soccer and lacrosse. She additionally pursued an interest in the musical arts and played competitive violin and piano, including time at the Manhattan School of Music. She is the proud product of the New York State public school system and graduated from Tappan Zee High School in 2003.

Jamal Shillingford, MD

Biography Jamal was born and raised on the small island of St. Croix in the U.S. Virgin Islands. He graduated as salutatorian from the St. Croix Country Day High School in 2004. After high school he traveled to Baltimore, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Johns Hopkins University in 2008. With a major in Chemistry and a minor in music from the Peabody Conservatory, he went on to graduate from Johns Hopkins with the highest distinction. While at Johns Hopkins, he was awarded numerous honors including the Hodson Trust Success Scholarship, Jay Menon M.D. Memorial Scholarship, Congressional Black Caucus Scholarship, eight consecutive semesters of the Dean’s List and was inducted into numerous honor societies including the Golden Key International Honour Society, National Society of Collegiate Scholars, and Phi Beta Kappa.

Biography David grew up in Wilton, CT and is the middle child of Rose and Florindo Trofa. His childhood was spent playing soccer in the backyard where he honed his skills prior to competing on multiple nationally competitive soccer teams including the Connecticut Olympic Development Program. He later attended Greens Farms Academy where he wrestled as the top seeded 130-pound wrestler in New England during his senior year. He graduated as the salutatorian of his class.
