Hip and Knee Team Published Perioperative Pain Control Study in JBJS

Members of the Columbia Orthopedics hip and knee team, including Jeffrey A. Geller, MD, Chief of Hip and Knee Reconstruction; H. John Cooper, MD; and Roshan P. Shah, MD, were published in The Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery (JBJS) for their article “Adductor Canal Block Compared with Periarticular Bupivacaine Injection for Total Knee Arthroplasty: A Prospective Randomized Trial.” This randomized controlled clinical trial of 150 patients compared the efficacy of adductor canal blocks (ACB) and periarticular anesthetic injections (PAI) for pain management in total knee arthroplasty. The research concluded that ACB alone is an inferior method for perioperative pain control but there was no significant differences in pain control between PAI alone and ACB+PAI.
