Columbia Ortho Establishes the David Roye, MD, Pride Visiting Medical Student Scholarship
As part of our commemoration of Pride Month, Columbia Orthopedics is delighted to announce the establishment of The David Roye, MD, Pride Visiting Medical Student Scholarship, which will support a rising fourth-year medical student who, prior to completing medical school, will spend a month under the guidance of the faculty in our department. Preference will be given to applicants who are leaders/active in the LGBTQ+ community. The Fund is being established with a seed gift from David Roye, MD, VP&S Class of 1975, former chief of the Division of Pediatric Orthopedic Surgery, and an accomplished, internationally renowned orthopedic surgeon.
The Fund will help nurture the early careers and further the education of promising medical students who have demonstrated an interest in the field. Dr. Roye, discussing why he wanted to establish this fund, observed: “The goal is to provide students with understanding and support, so that they feel welcome in our community of orthopedic surgery. This scholarship will allow us to attract students who are active in the LGBTQ+ community, to develop their interest, and to recruit these young leaders to our specialty.”
Students from any medical school will be eligible for the Roye Pride Scholarship, which seeks to inculcate in young doctors the values that David Roye embodies: compassion, excellence, success, giving back. William N. Levine, MD, Chair of Columbia’s Department of Orthopedic Surgery, remarked: “We are so thrilled to announce the establishment of the Roye Pride Scholarship Fund, in collaboration with PrideOrtho, the first orthopedic organization established for LGBQT+ people. Dr. Roye is the consummate pediatric orthopedic surgeon, researcher, and advocate, and we are indebted to his generosity in helping to establish this scholarship.”
The Department will begin reviewing applicants for the inaugural Roye Pride Scholars in 2023.
